So, what is this whole thing about? Well, I spend a lot of time trying to learn new skills. Call it DIY, call is self-sufficiency, call it ridiculous – it’s become a passion, hobby, and quest for new ways of living. Yesterday, the idea emerged to do something along the lines of Julie & Julia, the 100 mile diet or my personal favourite, Victorian Farm.
Starting on the summer solstice (June 21st), I will challenge myself to create something new every week for a year. This could be a smocked dress, this could be pickled eggplant, this could be a bicycle-powered generator, this could be paper. The idea is to make something that did not exist before, and to learn a new skill along the way.
Here’s how it will work:
1. You send me ideas of things to make! I veto the challenges I simply can’t wrap my head around, and put the rest in a hat.
2. Every Monday, I close my eyes, pick out a challenge, and post it here.
3. I spend the next 7 days completing this challenge, recording my adventures with pictures, stories, recipes, tips, and “how to”’s.
Here’s how you can be involved:
~ Follow my progress here, on ayearfromscratch.wordpress.com.
~ Send me challenges for the hat! Challenges need to be inexpensive (under $100), doable in a week and useful. Other than that, the sky is the limit. Be creative! This year is in your hands.
~ Take part in the fun! The how to’s, instruction guides, photos, narratives, etc will be written to help everyone take part in these activities in the comfort of their own homes.
Is this a little ridiculous? Yes. But life is meant to be filled with silliness and fun.
Thanks in advance for the ideas, support and cheerleading. It’s going to be quite the year.

Smiling till my face aches.
oh my gosh! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this. You channel the creative side of me that strives to get crafty but struggles following through. I have ideas now (you’re about to get an email) and I’m sure I’ll have lots more as I tour around on my bike! You rock my hand-knitted home-spun wool socks off my friend.
Julie and Julia is now one of my most favourite films so I’m so excited about your blob Elizabeth. (oops, that would be blog!)
I was recently given a small batch of Amish friendship bread batter that takes 10 days of mixing before you divide it and bake it. Today, I divided it. I’ll bake it later tonight but if I could get one of the spin off batches to you, that would be my suggestion. My neighbour gave it to my neighbour, who gave it to me and now I have 3 bathces to give away and one extra to keep to make more in 10 days. WHo knows how long this bread batter has been floating around but apparently it makes excellent bread!! Kewl huh?
Have you made it before??
Louise, I would LOVE to get one of your spin-off batches and try my hand in it. Maybe if we overlap at the cottage sometime this summer, you could give me a tutorial??
Just hit the 10 day mark and baked my two loaves of bread tonight. Soooooo…..yummy!!!!! Sweet and cinnamony. Have no idea why it takes 10 days of mushing around but it is so good!!!
Maybe I can give a batch half way there to Chris this coming weekend?? You’d have only 4 days to go after that before reaching day 10. Or maybe Chris could take over this batch and then she could give you some of her starter batch!
It really is worth the wait. – Oh and it comes with complete and easy instructions!
That sounds amazing! I’m at the cottage July 17-23rd too, so maybe we could swap batches then!
How about learning to dance Flamenco?
Flamenco unites body and soul in such a poerful and poetic way. Its like meditating (in the way it connects to spirit), but way more fun. It makes you powerful, centered on your desires and soul, unleashes the very power of your essence and intuition, its a form of art, a beautiful dance, strong, live movements. Its fire and water together. Its pure passion. Its love and achievement. You ve got to try and see it.
Two short flamenco videos:
I love it as I love my soul.
Best wishes to your project (whatever ones you choose)
Yes! Flamenco! It’s in the hat! Thanks for sharing Andre.
Love this idea!! Can others play along too and link to your blog?
Thanks for the message! Of course you can play along — I would love nothing more! And definitely feel free to link away. I just checked out your online class video – looks fabulous!
